From Venues Ōtautahi and WasteCo

Apr 4, 2024

In regard to your article this morning on the collection and disposal of rubbish and recycling materials following the Second Cricket Test, Venues Ōtautahi and WasteCo wish to clarify this process.

In brief, WasteCo was contracted by the event organiser, Venues Ōtautahi, to provide and later clear an assortment of bins for collection of waste and recyclables. We are clear that this process was carried out accordingly.

As contracted, all materials collected at the event were combined into larger bins for delivery to a waste disposal site. Cardboard waste from the event – 965kg or 26 percent of the total refuse by weight – was sorted at that site into a separate waste stream and recycled.

Venues Ōtautahi has acknowledged in its statement to The Press yesterday that there was no process in place for sorting the remaining refuse into separate waste streams.

Both Venues Ōtautahi and WasteCo regret that the provision of assorted rubbish and recycling bins created an impression that all recyclable materials from the event would ultimately be disposed of separately from the materials sent to landfill and are working together to alleviate this issue in the future.

Both Venues Ōtautahi and WasteCo believe we all have a role to play in delivering the best environmental outcome with respect to waste including manufacturers, transporters, consumers, retailers and those specialising in collection and disposal; and both are committed to examining their work processes to ensure this is achieved.
